Snow feetAs temperatures dip in much of the country, ice-related falls are inevitable. Falling on ice or other slippery surfaces are a major cause of ankle sprains and fractures. During a fall, the ice or slippery surface can actually accelerate the fall and cause a more severe injury. The ankle is commonly affected as each joint supports one-half of the body’s weight and the foot can go any direction while slipping. The ankle is also notorious for masking a severe injury. Just because you are able to walk does not mean your ankle is not broken or severely sprained. It’s possible to walk and mistakenly believe the injury does not require medical treatment. Delaying treatment and walking on the injured joint can add to the severity of the injury and lead to chronic instability, joint pain, or arthritis later in life.

Some falls can cause the ankle to break and sprain at the same time. Other times, a bad sprain can hide the broken bones. This can happen because an ankle sprain affects the ligaments supporting the ankle joint while a broken ankle refers to the bones that make up the ankle joint. With the many ways to injure the ankle, it’s important to have an injured ankle evaluated as soon as possible. Symptoms of an ankle sprain or break include swelling, pain, bruising, bone protruding, or an inability to support the body’s weight.

Most ankle fractures and sprains are treated by immobilizing the joint and restoring normal alignment. This may be completed with a cast, splint, or surgical operation.
