Will the Nail Grow Back Normally After Removed?

The answer to this question depends on the extent of the nail injury. You need to what a nail matrix is to understand how the nail may or may not grow back. The nail matrix in the area under the nail that produces new cells.

Damaged Nail Matrixtoenail removal | thick toenail

The nail will most likely grow back normally after being removed. It may take 6-12 months for a full healthy regrowth depending on the toenail.

Undamaged Nail Matrix

Any trauma to the nail matrix may cause the new nail to grow back thicker, ridged, or deformed.

What You Can Do

  • Consult one of our podiatrists
  • Consider partial or full removal
  • Nail matrix ablation

In conclusion, having a thick or damaged toenail removed will probably not result in a healthier nail. Once the nail matrix (nail growth center) is damaged, it typically will continue to produce an altered nail.
