Summer is a time for barefoot adventures, backyard play, beach trips, and endless outdoor fun. But while kids are busy running around, their feet can take quite a beating. The summer heat brings a unique set of challenges for growing feet, from increased moisture and sweating to unsupportive footwear and exposure to hot pavement or rough terrain.

Fungal Infections Thrive in the HeatChildren's Summer Foot Care | Pediatric Feet

One of the most common issues we see during the summer is fungal infections. Sweaty shoes, damp socks, and public spaces like pools or locker rooms are all breeding grounds for athlete's foot and plantar warts. Children's feet, often bare or in wet shoes, are especially vulnerable. Encourage your child to wear water shoes in shared areas and to thoroughly dry their feet after swimming, especially between the toes.

The Importance of Supportive Shoes: Flip-Flops Aren't Enough

Footwear is another big concern. While flip-flops and slip-ons are convenient, they offer very little support for growing feet. Extended wear can lead to arch pain, blisters, or even long-term structural issues. Instead, choose sandals with arch support or breathable sneakers made from mesh or moisture-wicking materials. A well-fitted, supportive shoe can make all the difference in protecting your child's foot health during periods of high activity.

Protect Feet from Heat, Cuts, and Sunburn

Protection also extends to the skin. Hot pavement, rocky trails, shark shells, and even sunburns can be painful and damaging to bare feet. Remind your child to wear shoes even for quick trips outside, and don't forget to apply sunscreen to the tops of their feet, an area that's often overlooked but just as prone to burns as shoulders and noses.
