What is Toenail Fungus?
Foot fungus or toenail fungus is also known as onychomycosis, a common condition where the fungal affects one or more toenails. It may begin as a white or yellow spot under the tip of the nail. Eventually, the nail will thicken, change color, and become brittle. Without treatment, the fungus can spread and lead to permanent damage or secondary infections.
What are the Common Causes of Toenail Fungus
- Walking in damp areas barefoot: Locker rooms, swimming pools, or communal showers
- Poor foot hygiene: Not drying your feet properly or wearing sweaty shoes
- Injury: Trauma to the nail can weaken the structure
- Tight footwear: Wearing shoes that do not allow airflow, which traps moisture
There are several more causes of why you may develop toenail fungus. Be cautious of the following symptoms so the fungus can be treated and not spread.
Common Symptoms of Toenail Fungus
- Discolored nails
- Thickened nails
- Brittle or crumbly nails
- Foul odor
- Pain or discomforter
Surgery
Surgery for toenail fungus is an option for severe cases, but it is not commonly needed.
