Can a Podiatrist Help With Bunions?

Yes! At Coastal Podiatry Associates, our doctors have seen many patients with bunions come in the door and get them back out to their daily activities without discomfort and pain. Our doctors will conduct an in-depth physical exam to check for abnormal foot mechanics, and listen carefully to symptoms that brought you in. X-rays may be taken of your foot to show the position of the big toe joint and see if the bunion is affecting other bones in your foot.

Bunions can range from minor to severe complications, but here we can help you get immediate and long-lasting relief no matter the severity of the bunion.

What is a Bunion?

A bunion is a bony bump, usually near the joint at the base of the big toe. Bunions are readily apparent in many people and not only are they painful, but they can be unsightly. The faulty mechanical structure of the foot along with certain foot types will predispose one to this common foot deformity. As bunions worsen, they can cause basic foot gear to become discomforting and daily walking to become painful.

Some may also develop Talior's bunions (bunionettes). Tailor's bunions are painful bony growths that develop where your pinkie toe meets your foot. Managing this type of bunion is done by nonsurgical treatments like changing the type of shoes you wear or taping the toes back to their natural position.

What Causes Bunions?

  • Heredity: Bunions can be genetic, and run in families
  • Footwear: Wearing shoes that may be too tight and narrow
  • Medical conditions: Various forms of arthritis, or inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis
  • Foot structure: Foot deformities such as low arches or flat feet

There are several more causes for why bunions may form. Be cautious of the following symptoms to be able to catch the growth sooner than later.

What Are Symptoms Of Bunions?

  • Swelling and inflammation
  • Throbbing or intense discomfort
  • Redness and soreness

Is Bunion Surgery Necessary?

Bunion surgery is only recommended for severe cases. If your bunions are causing you daily pain, and if other treatments have not helped, surgery would be the next option. The surgery takes about 30 minutes to an hour depending on the type. As for recovery time, it can take weeks to months depending on the severity.
