What are Flat Feet (Fallen Arches)?

Flat Feet is a condition in which the entire sole of the foot touches the floor when standing. When pressure is applied, the inside of the foot (the arches) will flatten. Flat feet can occur during childhood if the arches of the feet don't develop, after an injury, or from the wear and tear of aging.

What are Common Causes of Fallen Arches?

  • Genetics: Flat feet can be hereditary
  • Aging: As people age, the tendons and muscles in their feet can weaken
  • Injuries: Foot or ankle injuries can cause flat feet
  • Other conditions:
    • Diabetes
    • Rheumatoid arthritis
    • Obesity
    • High blood pressure
    • Cerebral palsy

Common Symptoms of Flat Feet

  • Pain or discomfort in the arch or heel
  • Swelling along the inner side of the foot
  • Difficulty standing on your toes
  • Uneven wear on your shoes
  • Fatigue or arching in the feet and legs

Flat Feet Treatment Options

  • If there are no symptoms or complications, treatment is not needed
  • For mild symptoms, supportive footwear, or customer orthotics can help
  • Sever cases may need more attention, but surgery is only considered for structural corrections
