Athlete's foot is a contagious fungal infection that affects the skin on the feet, often beginning between the toes. It's commonly found on athletes and people who frequently wear tight-fitting shoes or sweat heavily. 

How to tell if you have athlete's foothow to detect and prevent athlete's foot

Common signs include:

  • Dry, scaly, or peeling skin
  • Itching, stinging, or burning between the toes or on the soles of the feet
  • Cracked or blistered skin
  • Redness or inflammation
  • Foul order

Athlete's foot is often confused with dry skin, eczema, or psoriasis. If over-the-counter treatments don't help or if symptoms worsen, schedule an appointment with one of our board-certified podiatrists for proper diagnosis. 

How to prevent athlete's foot

To reduce the risk:

  • Keep your feet clean and dry
  • Wear moisture-wicking socks and change them daily
  • Choose breathable shoes and alternate pairs to let them dry out
  • Always wear shower shoes in public facilities
  • Avoid sharing shoes, socks, or towels
  • Use antifungal powder or spray if you're prone to infection
