What is a Callus?

A callus is a thick, hard area of skin that forms as your body's natural response to repeated friction, pressure, or irritation. Calluses typically appear on the heels, balls of the feet, or sides of the toes. While calluses are generally harmless, they can sometimes become painful or lead to complications like infections.

What Causes Calluses to Form on The Feet?

Calluses form due to: How did I get a callus on my foot?

  • High-impact activities like running or walking long distances
  • Wearing shoes that are too tight, loose, or poorly cushioned
  • Foot abnormalities like bunions or hammertoes that alter your gait
  • Standing for long periods on hard surfaces
  • Not wearing socks or wearing socks that bunch up or rub
  • Walking barefoot, especially on rough ground

How to Prevent Future Foot Calluses

  • Wear well-fitting, supportive shoes
  • Use cushioned insoles if needed
  • Avoid walking barefoot on hard surfaces
  • Moisturize your feet daily
