Toenail Fungus 101

Toenail fungus is a slow-growing infection underneath the nail. In some cases, toenail fungus may affect more than one toe and can lead to permanent damage or secondary infections without effective treatment. 

What are the common signs of toenail fungus

  • Discoloration of the nail: Yellow, white, or browntoenail fungus symptoms | preventing toenail fungus
  • Thickened or bottle nails
  • Crumbly or ragged nail edges
  • If the nail has separated from the nail bed
  • If the affected nail has a foul smell

Is toenail fungus painful?

Toenail fungus is often painless unless the infection worsens. It may cause discomfort with wearing certain shoes or walking. 

Who is most at risk for toenail fungus? 

Anyone can be at risk of getting toenail fungus but those with higher chances include:

  • Older adults (65+)
  • Those with diabetes or weakened immune systems
  • People with a history of athlete's foot
  • Those who frequently use communal showers, gyms, pools, etc

Can toenail fungus go away on its own?

No, since it can spread you will need some kind of treatment. If left untreated it can lead to worsening symptoms or permanent nail damage. 

What are the treatment options?

  • Topical Treatments
  • Oral Medication
  • Laser Therapy
  • Nail Removal

How can I prevent toenail fungus?

  • Keep feet dry and clean
  • Wear breathable shoes
  • Avoid being barefoot in communal areas
  • Trim nails straight across and disinfect nail tools regularly
