What is a Bunion?

A bunion is a bony bump that forms at the base of the big toe. It develops when the big toe starts leaning inward toward the second toe, forcing the joint to stick out and become misaligned.

What Causes a Bunion to Form? bunion causes faq

Bunions can be caused by a variety of factors, including:

  • Genetics: Inherited foot structure is the most common cause of bunions. If bunions run in your family, you may be more likely to develop one.
  • Footwear: Wearing tight, narrow, or high-heeled shoes can put pressure on the big toe, forcing it inward and enhancing bunion formation.
  • Foot mechanics: Low arches, flat feet, or overly flexible joints can increase bunion risk.
  • Arthritis: Inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis can contribute to bunion development.
  • Injury: Trauma or repeated stress on the foot can cause a bunion to form over time.
