Yellow & Brown Toenail

A yellow or brown discoloration on your toenail is a common sign of toenail fungus. This kind of infection causes changes in the nail's color, texture, and thickness. If you also experience brittle, crumbly, or foul-smelling toenails, it's likely fungal. Over-the-counter medications may help for mild cases, but most fungal infections need prescription-strength medications.

Causes of Toenail FungusYellow and brown toenail fungus

  • Warm, damp environments (like sweaty socks)
  • Wearing tight or non-breathable shoes
  • Walking barefoot in communal areas (locker rooms, pools, gyms)
  • Nail trauma or injury
  • Poor circulation or a weakened immune system
  • Underlying conditions like diabetes or athlete's foot

Treatment for Toenail Fungus

  1. Our podiatrist will examine the nail and may take a small clipping for lab testing to confirm the type of fungus
  2. Depending on the severity, treatment may include:
    1. Topical antifungal medications
    2. Oral antifungal medications
    3. Debridement: removal of the part of the nail that is infected to help the medication penetrate better
  3. Follow-up care and consistency with treatment, and good foot hygiene are key
