Understanding Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy and Nerve Pain

Diabetic perineural neuropathy (DPN) is a common and often debilitating complication of diabetes. It occurs when high blood sugar levels damage nerves throughout the body, most often in the legs and feet. This nerve damage can lead to a range of symptoms, from numbness and tingling to sharp burning or shooting pain.

The pain from DPN can be persistent and difficult to manage with conventional methods. It can interfere with sleep, exercise, and basic daily activities. Many patients grow frustrated with oral medications that may have systemic side effects or don't provide adequate relief. Finding a treatment that specifically targets the source of the pain without impacting the rest of the body is often the goal.

What is Qutenza and How Does It Offer Relief?

Quetnza is an FDA-approved, non-opioid treatment that uses a high-concentration capsaicin patch to provide targeted relief from neuropathic pain. Unlike oral medications that circulate throughout your body, the Qutenza patch is applied directly to the site of pain, acting locally to desensitize the nerve endings that are causing the discomfort.

The active ingredient, 8% capsaicin, is a concentrated form of the compound found in chilli peppers. When applied to the skin, it works by overwhelming and desensitizing the pain receptors in the superficial nerves. This process, known as defunctionalization, essentially "resets" the overactive pain signal, providing a period of significant pain reduction. This isn't just masking pain; it's changing how your nerves transmit pain signals.

The Qutenza Treatment Process: What to Expect

The treatment is a straightforward, in-office procedure. Here's a step-by-step look at what you can expect during your visit to Coastal Podiatry Associates:

  1. Preparation: The skin on your feet will be cleaned, and to ensure your comfort, a topical anesthetic may be applied to numb the area before the patch is put on.
  2. Patch Application: Once the skin is prepped, the Qutenza patch is carefully applied to the treatment area. The patch will remain on the skin for approximately 30 to 60 minutes. During this time, you may feel some warmth, tingling, or a mild burning sensation. This is a normal part of the process and indicates the medication is working.
  3. Removal and Aftercare: After the treatment time is complete, the patch is removed, and the area is cleaned with a special cleansing gel to remove any residual capsaicin. Any lingering warmth or tingling typically fades within a few hours.

The Lasting Benefits of Qutenza

One of the most significant advantages of the Qutenza treatment is its long-lasting effect. A single application can provide up to three months of pain relief. This means you can find comfort without the burden of daily pills:

Other key benefits include:

  • Non-Opioid and Non-Systemic: Quetnza provides effective pain relief without the risks and side effects associated with oral opioids or other systemic medications.
  • Targeted Relief: It works directly on the nerves causing the pain, providing a focused solution.
  • Repeatable: If needed, the treatment can be safely repeated every few months to maintain pain relief.
